Aloha, and welcome to the Music Collection at the University of Hawai`i. This page is designed to acquaint you with the Music Collection and some of the information services it provides.
The Music Collection at UH is the largest music collection in the state of Hawai`i and is administered by the state's only full-time Music Librarian, Gregg S. Geary (geary@hawaii.edu). The main collection is located on the third floor of Sinclair Library. Printed music and books and periodicals about music are located in the central area of the floor while sound recordings, videos, and computer software are found in the Wong Audiovisual Center also on the third floor.

One of the functions of the collection is to support the teaching and research efforts of students and faculty from the UH Music Department. Because of this primary function, the collection is particularly strong in holdings of materials related to western fine-art music from the Middle Ages to the present and to ethnomusicological materials. The collection is diverse and one can find a wealth of material in the areas of music education, theory, esthetics, popular music, jazz, guitar repertoire, musical comedy, etc. But one should remember, the two primary areas of study, western art music and ethnomusicology, are emphasized.
As you enter the Wong Audio Visual Center visitors to the Music Collection will find a reference desk where they may ask questions and find help in using the collection. The reference desk welcomes all inquiries in any field but is best able to deal with questions related to music and videos. See reference desk hours. Located right outside of the Wong Audio Visual Center along the wall is the Music Reference Collection. Here are located a host of reference materials on music including, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, discographies, guides, bibliographies, directories, etc. Two index tables contain major reference works such as the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Music Index, and RILM Abstracts.
On the third floor are the printed music materials including printed music, back issues of music periodicals, and books about music. The call number classification for these materials is M, ML, and MT.
