Rules governing the use of archival materials in the Music Archives of
the Sinclair Library are devised to facilitate research and to assist in
the orderly administration and protection of rare, fragile, and/or unique
materials. Preserving these irreplaceable materials is a responsibility
shared by archive staff, student assistants, and researchers. The following
procedures allow access to the collections while ensuring their preservation
as permanent resources for scholars.
- All backpacks, breifcases, suitcases, bags, umbrellas, purses, and
parcels of any kind must be stored in a designated area away from the
area where materials are being accessed.
- Notes may be taken in pencil only. No pens, markers,
or ink-based writing utensils may be used near any archive materials.
- Do not lean on, fold, trace, or mark/remove marks on any archival materials.
- Keep materials in their original order within their folders.
- Food and beverages (including water), and chewing gum are not allowed
near the archival materials.
- Cotton gloves may be required to handle certain materials (gloves will
be provided in such cases).
- Access to materials deemed exceptionally fragile may be restricted.
Photocopies or microfilms may be supplied in lieu of originals.
- All archive material must be used onsite and under supervision. No materials
may be removed from the library.
- Archives staff reserve the right to examine all personal materials upon
completion of access to the archives.
