- Pronouncing Dictionary
of Music and Musicians
Sometimes it's difficult for Americans to pronounce the titles of classical
music pieces or the names of their composers and performers since many of
them stem from other languages or countries. WOI Radio at Iowa State University
has developed a dictionary for classical music that provides a pronunciation
guide using a phonetic system developed by staffer E. Douglas Brown, based
on the tape-recorded ronunciations made by native speakers of each language.
Originally prepared for the staff to aid in their on-air delivery, the dictionary
is available for free at the URL below in PDF format. Although far from
complete, the dictionary, with 30,000 entries, is the most comprehensive
guide of its kind currently available. (WOI, Iowa State University)
