Quick Facts

The attractive Wong AV Center, located on the third floor of Sinclair Library, serves a broad audience, including University of Hawai'i at Manoa students, faculty and staff, other University of Hawai'i colleges, visiting scholars, and visitors from the community.
The Center contains collections of videotapes DVDs, CDs, and audiocassettes. Filmstrips, slide kits, CD-ROMs, phonodiscs, and videodiscs are also available, in addition to a large collection of feature films. Items may be borrowed for a period of 4 days with proper UH Identification. Items may also be renewed once online on the due date for an additional loan period of 4 days.
The Center provides a Reserves service for instructors and faculty to place course materials such as books or test examples that can be borrowed by students. There is also an advance booking service for classroom showing of AV materials called AV Classroom Request.
Special effort is being made to create outstanding collections of media on Hawai'i, the Pacific, and Asia.
In an effort to provide maximum access to our collection to as many patrons as possible the Wong Audiovisual Center has placed limits on the number of MEDIA items (CD, DVD, Tape, Videotape, Kit, Film, etc.) that a patron may check out at one time. The limit applies to any combination of media types. For example, a limit of 10 items means that you may check out 4 CDs, 4 DVDs, and 2 videotapes, or any similar combination totaling ten items.
These limits vary depending on patron or borrower type. They are as follows:
Undergraduates (all campuses) --Limited to 10 media items; Graduate students (all campuses) -- Limited to 20 media items; Faculty -- Unlimited (there is no change in policy, this has been our past practice);
Community Users and Associate Users -- Limited to 1 item (in house use only). No change from current policy.
Dedicated on January 23, 1987, the Harry C. & Nee-Chang Wong Audiovisual Center was made possible through a generous gift from the Harry C. & Nee-Chang Wong Foundation. The continued generosity of the Wong Foundation has made it possible for the Center both to keep up with technological developments in the area of media and to provide resources and equipment for student and faculty use.
The Wong Audiovisual Center's strengths include one of the best moving images collections on Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands. The Center pays special attention to acquiring, reformatting and preserving materials. The Center regularly tapes off-air and preserves most locally produced programs on Hawai'i. Other outstanding collections include those on Asian Americans, Asia, Art, Architecture and the Performing Arts. A carefully selected collection of print media reference tools supports the Center's acquisition and reference services.
In spring 1990, the Hawai'i Interactive Television System (HITS) installed its transmission equipment for the entire University in the Wong Center. This equipment provides the program satellite feed to the Manoa campus and also enables the Center to remotely transmit to selected classrooms. The additional support of the Wong Audiovisual Center by the University Library demonstrates the University of Hawai'i's commitment to providing state-of-the-art equipment and services. The Wong Center staff endeavors to provide an excellent level of service to honor our continuing relationship with the Wong Family.
A collection of audiovisual reference tools is available on the Third Floor. It includes music indexes, sound recordings in print, filmographies, videographies, media review sources, databases and indexes, and discographies.
Installed CD-ROM Multimedia Reference titles are available to Center users. Users may sign up to use the stations for a block of 30 minutes per day. Users who have not reserved a time block must relinquish the station to anyone who has signed up, and UHM users have priority on the stations. Please ask Sinclair staff for assistance and they will be happy to help you.
